Temptation. . . and hungry ghost month!

It's the 7th Lunar Month. Unseen beings are roaming about on earth, according to the Chinese culture, and so this ancient practice has merged into Malaysian pop culture. On this month, you'd see the Chinese folks and associations in various suburbs and gardens across the Klang valley setting up makeshift garages to house paper effigy of the Lord of the underworld, Lord Yama. There will be a great feast that will last for 3 days. During this feast, Chinese opera troupes will perform for special guest, hence the empty seats on the 2 first main rows. Empty Mahjong tables with mahjong tiles ready for playing. . . and loads of pork, lamb, chicken, duck, crabs, prawns and many other mouthwatering food offerings. And copious amounts of 'Hell Money' being burned daily to be given away the special unseen 'guests'. . . aaah... Hungry Ghost festival is back!

I'm sure you know this month is when your Parents will tell you to come back home earlier, party less and definitely don't drink and drive! And a whole lot of other taboos, like don't wear black too often, dont' swear or curse, and definitely when you pee, please say excuse me....

As with last years 7th month, I'm on sabbatical again, No Meat, No Alcohol and No Sex. . . (Not even D.I.Y!) Haiz. . . the temptation is too great this time around. . . How does one torture a 'happy guy' during his sabbatical? The next blog will tell you. . .

Interesting article. If you are in Penang, you could see almost every street in chinatown has opera stage shows.
